DIMITRI: WORKS IN BLACK WAX (1952)

a film by Peter Hollander

An Ancona Films Production

Music by Joseph Liebling

In the Spring of 1952, Peter Hollander had a chance encounter at a neighborhood taverna in Rome with fellow American and sculptor Dimitri Hadzi.  An impromptu studio visit followed, and Hollander decided to document Hadzi’s exploration of the ancient technique of lost wax. Over a two month period in the artist’s studio and at the local foundry, Hollander captures Hadzi’s process from the initial sculpting of the black wax to the meticulous surface finishing after the casting process. This short film offers a charming portrait of Hadzi and a snapshot of the experience of American artists studying in post-war Europe.
